This design is an original artistic interpretation inspired by Indigenous resilience, unity, and the people who have shaped my journey.

  • Chief Black Hawk (1767–1838) was a respected Sauk leader who courageously defended his people's homelands. The Chicago Blackhawks hockey club later adopted his name in 1926, although the team's logo is a stylized artistic creation and not a historical portrait of Chief Black Hawk.
  • The bandana is inspired by the Mohawk Unity Flag, designed by Karoniaktajeh (Louis) Hall. The flag gained worldwide recognition during the 1990 Oka Crisis and has become a powerful symbol of Indigenous unity, sovereignty, resilience, and the protection of Indigenous lands and cultures.
  • This piece is also a tribute to my uncle, Dacajeweiah (Splitting the Sky) John Boncore Hill, a proud Mohawk man who had a profound impact on my life. Through his guidance and teachings, he instilled in me a deep respect for Mohawk history, culture, courage, and the importance of standing together as Indigenous peoples.

This artwork is created with respect for these histories and teachings. To me, it represents unity, freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of Indigenous Nations, while honoring those whose legacies continue to inspire future generations.
