Orca (Blackfish) – The Wolf of the Ocean

This piece is titled Connection to the Sea in honour of the orca, also known to many as the blackfish — a deeply respected being among the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The orca is often called the wolf of the sea because of its shared traits with the land-based wolf: they mate for life, hunt in coordinated packs, travel in tight-knit pods, and are fiercely loyal to their family. These mirrored characteristics reflect a deep spiritual symmetry between land and sea.

I remember a story told to me by one of my elders. When settlers first arrived on ships and saw these powerful beings breaching the ocean's surface, they named them “killer whales” out of fear. But to our people, the orca was never a killer — it was family.In the language they were called blackfish, and they were part of our extended kin. There are stories of times when boats would capsize and the people would sing the blackfish song, pounding on the sides of their vessels mimicking a drum. A pod would appear, guiding them safely back to shore. That’s the kind of connection we had — and still have — with the beings of the sea.

The design was originally hand-carved and later cast in .925 sterling silver using the lost wax casting method, preserving the spirit and strength of the orca in every detail. The pendant measures 1 ¾ inches by ⅜ inch and comes with a high-quality Italian-made sterling silver chain, available in various lengths for your comfort.

The back of the pendant is inscribed with the title “Connection to the Sea”, along with my artist signature and 925 hallmark, signifying both authenticity and intention.
