Connection to the Sea – Sterling Silver Earrings
Orca (Blackfish) – The Wolf of the Ocean

This piece is titled Connection to the Sea in honour of the orca — known to many Pacific Northwest Coast peoples as the blackfish. Among the indigenous people's of Northwest coast of Turtle Island, the orca is called the wolf of the sea because it shares the same sacred traits as the wolf on land: they mate for life, hunt in coordinated packs, travel in close family pods, and embody loyalty, protection, and unity. This deep connection to both sea and spirit is what inspired the design.

An elder once told me a story about the time settlers first arrived by ship. When they looked out over the rails and saw the powerful blackfish breaching the surface, they named it the “killer whale” out of fear. But our ancestors knew better. We had a spiritual bond with the orca. In the original language, they were called them blackfish. There are old stories of how — when boats capsized — The people would sing the blackfish song and pound on the sides of the boat. A pod would arrive and tow them safely to shore. That’s how closely we were connected to the beings of the sea. Recently, I saw a photo of coastal Indigenous people gently petting an orca who came to visit them at their canoe — that relationship is still alive today.

These earrings are hand-carved and cast in .925 sterling silver using the lost wax casting method, preserving every detail of the original design. They measure 1 ¾ inches by ⅜ inch and are fitted with heavy-gauge sterling silver ear hooks for durability and comfort.

The back of each earring is inscribed with the title “Connection to the Sea,” along with artists signature and the 925 sterling silver hallmark..
