In Cree teachings, the turtle carries deep significance as the symbol of truth, one of the Seven Grandfather Teachings. Truth, represented by the turtle, teaches us to stay grounded and maintain integrity through life’s journey. The turtle’s shell, with its 13 large plates, symbolizes the 13 moons of the year, connecting the turtle to time and natural cycles. Each of the smaller 28 segments on the shell represents the lunar phases, further linking it to patience and the rhythm of nature
In the Cree teachings, the turtle represents truth, one of the Seven Grandfather Teachings, symbolizing the enduring, unchanging nature of life. The turtle’s shell, with 13 large plates representing the moons of the year, reflects the natural cycles and the importance of patience and resilience. This connection to time emphasizes the need to move through life steadily, just as the turtle does, staying grounded and true to one’s path
I wanted the piece to honor these teachings. The process began with carving the original design into silver using intricate engraving techniques. After this, I used 3D scanning technology to digitally capture the piece, allowing for easy adjustments to its size. The final product was created using the lost wax casting method, producing the turtle in three different sizes. This combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology not only highlights the piece's artistry but also embodies the patience and truth symbolized by the turtle
Through this piece, I wanted to share the turtle’s teachings in a way that reflects both cultural wisdom and the precision of my craft. It serves as a reminder of the importance of truth, resilience, and living in harmony with the cycles of nature.
